Jan29 2008- Day 4 NH trip

Day 4 of NH trip

Morning 8:00AM to 11:30AM, 12:00PM-1:15PM

Went out to shoot near falls, station 1 and station2.
Firewire camera started to give a lot of trouble by not being recognised towards the end of UPS life. Multiple plug in-out of cables and resets were required to get it working again.
UPS1 lost charge at 11:30AM. Cathy and Gowri went out to pick another UPS while Rohith waited at Station2 for Kerry. Kerry from CRREL was to join us with the thermal IR camera.
Got back with the UPS2 by 12:00PM and Kerry came in the next 10 minutes.
Took shots with 2 zoom levels with IR and Visible 20cm apart at the river.
Got a few rain drops.
UPS2 lost charge.
Went to have lunch.

Afternoon 2:00PM -3:30PM

Collected IR and visible at station 1,2b.
UPS1 lost charge by 3:30PM.

Evening 4:00PM -

Started towards CRREL after getting gas and Rohith's new boots.
Short trip of Cathy's office.
Had dinner at Hanover 'Jewel of India'.

Lessons learnt/observations

  • Firewire connection to camera was intermittent.
  • It was worst just beofre UPS shut off - during both the charge loss.
  • Both pan-tilts would not work together on the modified 29th jan code.
  • High Dynamic Range images required. Parts of image completely saturate the CCD while some other parts, like shadows, are completely dark.

Discussions with Cathy

  • We need to start looking at generation of swath.
  • Error map in physical units is essential.
  • Possible use of this data and results to generate algorithms which can be used for roughness measures.

Questions for kerry

  • What is the source of gradient in the image clicked across the river.
  • Is it gradient in temp or property of distance and camera angle?
  • Samples of images with ground truth.
  • Samples from real sea ice.
